Future Me Worldview

Choosing Connection In A Culture Of Separation

A "Worldview" according to New Testament scholar and theologian N.T. Wright, " explain the basic stuff of the human existence, the lends through which the world is seen, the blueprint for how one should live in it and about all a sense of identity and place which enables human beings to be what they are". Worldviews provide stories through which human beings view reality and answer basic questions that determine humanity's manner of living:

  1. Who am I?
  2. Why do things happen?
  3. What is the purpose of life?
  4. What is human nature?
  5. What is sacred?Ā
  6. Who are we as people?
  7. Where did we come from and where are we going?Ā

Every human being possesses a worldview. However, we are not born with one. The worldview we hold to forms the bulk of our identity. Considering that as an infant we don't really possess the capacity to form words, let alone comprehend abstract concepts, we can conclude that we don't come with a worldview. It's formed in us over time, solidifying as we experience the various events of life. Numerous things directly and indirectly influence how e form our worldview, such as family, friends, community, education, religion, popular cultural influences, life experiences, and ourselves. In short, worldview is learned.Ā

Many people are uncertain and vague about their worldview, while others answer that they have a biblical or Christian worldview, a Qur'anic or Islamic worldview, a conservative or progressive worldview......The list is endless and mostly incorrect because, you see ( or maybe not ), it is your worldview that informsĀ your view of the Bible or the Qur'an or politics or religion or other races or genders.Ā

Most of us are like the two young fish who are lazily drifting and chattering among some reeds on warm morning. An older fish swam by and asked " How's the water, boys? ". The two fish looked at each other, confused. " Water? What does he mean, water? "

When people are asked where they learned their worldview and how wholly or holistically they live out that worldview, there is often silence.Ā

The difficulty arises because ur worldview is the Ā lens through which we view everything and everyone, and yet we cannot seeĀ the lens. It's like trying to find our glasses when we've lost our glasses. Consequently, we can't tell if we're seeing the world around us accurately. How then do we test the lens when we're looking through it?Ā

Fortunately, holy Scripture has done the work for us by literally give us a worldview eye exam right at the beginning of the story in Genesis. The Genesis account is divinely inspired by Moses, in the wilderness, explaining to the newly liberated Hebrews how they as a people ended up in slavery in a world where enslaving people is acceptable and considered a sign of victory and success to the enslaver. Prior to Moses's narrative, Israel's sole identity has been as powerless slaves and the reason they believe the way they do about themselves and the world they're in is because they are acting in a agreement with a separation worldview.Ā

This worldview is sourced in fear and a deep belief in the absoluteness of scarcity. This belief can result only in the formation of artificial identities that are self-protecting and self-promotional. These artificial identities create a fragmented, broken world of rising and falling empires ( like Egypt ) in a endless cycle of war and bloodshed.Ā

The problem then is a follows. Most humans are raised and live in this same separation worldview, sourced in scarcity and as a result, our operating life descriptor is " NOT ENOUGH!"
